EITC Awareness Day is a nationwide effort to ensure that working American taxpayers know about the Earned Income Tax Credit, which reduces the amount of tax owed by low to moderate income workers. The Justice & Diversity Center, through its Low-Income Taxpayer Clinic, helps low-income taxpayers with EITC issues, along with representation before the IRS in audits, appeals and collections.
The EITC greatly reduces poverty for working families. In 2017, more than 25.8 million workers received more than $63.8 billion in EITC refunds, including $6.8 billion by California taxpayers.
However, the IRS estimates that one out of five workers doesn’t claim the EITC they earned. This leaves billions of dollars on the table that workers could use for groceries, rent, utilities and other bills.
JDC’s Low-Income Taxpayer Clinic helps hundreds of taxpayers with brief services and advice, but many taxpayers’ issues need the professional help that Tax Attorneys, Enrolled Agents, and C.P.A’s can provide. Taxpayers’ pro bono services enable us to provide critical services to our clients and unrepresented litigants.
