The School to College program has achieved a major accomplishment with one of its students being named a Willie Mays Scholar. This scholarship, awarded by the Giants Community Fund, is highly coveted in San Francisco as it helps to address inequalities in education. Khalil Cohen-Jackson, a student at Academy High School, supported by the STC program, was chosen as one of the five recipients of the scholarship.
With the support of his mother and 1:1 guidance from the STC program, Khalil was able to confidently complete the application process and prepare for the selection interview. Currently in 11th grade, Khalil’s motivation to succeed stems from his grandmother’s battle with breast cancer and his desire to make a positive impact on the black community in San Francisco, where only 31% of people obtain a bachelor’s degree. Khalil plans to become an oncologist to help others facing the same challenges that his grandmother faced.
Willie Mays once said, “In order to excel, you must be completely dedicated to your chosen sport,” and Khalil is certainly dedicated to his studies and his future career. He is ready to face any curveball that comes way and overcome any barrier towards his goals. Congratulations Khalil! You can learn more from KTVU’s coverage.
