This “preview” article begins a series in which the Solo & Small Firm Section (S/SF) will provide content of interest to the S/SF community.
The S/SF Section promotes the interests of attorneys who practice as solos and in firms with nine or fewer attorneys. In this space expect perspectives from our members, current goings-on, and more. We will spotlight our diverse legal specialties, our entrepreneurship, and our pro bono and other contributions to the community.
History
The S/SF Section’s first executive committee was formed in late 2014, with Matt Gluck as Chair and Carolyn Lee as de facto Vice-Chair. They roughly modeled the excomm on the Barristers Club board where they served together, including forming subcommittees to expand the section’s activities in areas including, among others, CLE programming, networking, law practice management, mentorship, and communications.
The S/SF Section has organized happy hours, conducted CLE programs focusing on issues relevant to our demographic, and hosted popular monthly brown bag lunches discussing hot topics. The S/SF’s 2014 JDC Bike-A-Thon team “Pedibusque Rotarum” was among the clear leaders in spirit, if not cycling prowess.
Vision
We have big plans for the future: Works-in-progress include a conference with a focus on networking and professional development; mentorship-focused participation in JDC’s Federal Pro Bono Project, pairing experienced lawyers with lawyers seeking to grow their expertise while performing valuable pro bono service; and a retooling of the Solo/Small Firm Toolkit into a living, breathing resource.
Leadership
The S/SF excomm includes Julia Campins, Laura Drossman, Tom Elke, Richard Frischer, Matt Gluck, Susan Gibbs, John Hansen, Charles Jung, Paul Katz, Carolyn Lee, Aaron Minnis, Chris O’Connell, John O’Grady, Mark Punzalan, Joshua Ridless, Kyle Schriner, Matt Sullivan, Eric Toscano, and Jason Wolford.
