San Francisco voters recently voted for a universal right to counsel for San Francisco tenants facing eviction, but Prop F will not go into effect for another year.
In the meantime, it is critical that volunteers keep helping with the Housing Negotiation Project (HNP), which provides limited-scope representation to individuals and families facing eviction during their mandatory settlement conferences.
97% of HNP clients qualify as low-income, and even moderate-income tenants do not have the disposable income to hire a lawyer. HNP is the first pro bono project of its kind, in which every single person in need of representation has a pro bono attorney. For many vulnerable San Francisco residents, HNP is the last defense against homelessness.
