The Homeless Advocacy Project’s (HAP) building at 125 Hyde Street is positioned next to a former United States Postal Service facility, which was recently sold to Shorenstein Properties. In turn, Shorenstein planned to deed the property to the City & County of San Francisco for development of 60 low-income housing units. Behind both properties is an alley,
where HAP holds an easement to Golden Gate Avenue.

Shorenstein’s project design called for one and one-half feet of HAP’s easement in order to complete a residential underground parking garage. Enter BASF Board Member Peter Meier, a partner at Paul Hastings, who offered the pro bono services of Buck B. Endemann, an associate in Paul Hasting’s Environmental and Energy Practice.

Endemann’s task was to be a simple negotiation with Shorenstein around easement rights since both parties were extremely supportive of new low-income housing. But the task turned into a multi-week project which ultimately involved Shorenstein, the city and other buildings who shared easements of the alley.

In the spirit of mutual cooperation, Endemann secured a renegotiated easement for HAP, which allows the city to build badly needed housing.

For his dedicated efforts on behalf of HAP, Buck Endemann will be among the winners of a 2016 BASF Award of Merit, which will be awarded during the Annual Membership Luncheon on December 15.
