On Friday May 1, BASF celebrated Law Day by taking 12 volunteer attorneys to three high schools throughout San Francisco to educate more than 150 students about the Law Day theme, “Magna Carta: Symbol of Freedom Under Law.” 2015 marks the 800th anniversary of Magna Carta.
Volunteer Michelle Enchill, an associate at Pillsbury Winthrop Shaw Pittman, wrote,
“I have to admit that I had my doubts about whether a Magna Carta lesson would be interesting to a group of high school students, but they were so engaged. Another student really got into his role as a prosecutor. Afterwards, he approached me and asked me ‘How does someone become a lawyer?’ – wow! The choice of videos were modern, concise, and funny. I was truly inspired by those students. They taught me a few things about contemporary views regarding music, criminal justice, and equality. It was really an interchange of encouragement. I could tell by the way that the kids were talking about Magna Carter, King John, and the nobility that they really understood the main principles of that document and how those principles live on even today.”
