Here at the Justice & Diversity Center (JDC), we continue to provide the essential legal services, advocacy, and support that more than 9,000 people in San Francisco rely on each year. In the ten-plus weeks since we have been sheltered-in-place, JDC staff and attorneys have:
- Launched a new effort to help those who are on the frontlines of the coronavirus pandemic: hospital workers who risk their lives every day to save ours. With this new project, Life Planning for Life Savers, BASF and JDC are leading a group of Bay Area lawyers and organizations to provide legal help to frontline medical workers with emergency planning needs, including temporary powers of attorney, health care directives, and wills.
- Joined voices with legal organizations and community groups to call for a moratorium on evictions, urge protections for survivors of domestic violence who are at even greater risk during these isolated times, and call for the closing of immigration courts to protect detainees, staff, and the public from COVID-19.
- Offered legal assistance and guidance to nonprofit organizations that serve low-income and underserved communities. Many of these organizations are struggling right now, as COVID-19 has caused disruptions and much uncertainty. Through our Community Organization Representation Project (CORP), we created downloadable fact sheets and materials that cover topics from financial resources, employment law, and more for our nonprofit clients to help them through this crisis.
These are just a few highlights of the essential work we do, providing critical legal services to the communities that need it most in this challenging time.
And we couldn’t do it without you. We want to express our appreciation and immense gratitude for your past support and our shared concern for the most vulnerable members of our community. On behalf of the people we serve, our Board of Directors, our staff and volunteers, thank you! You make our work possible.
