The Justice & Diversity Center (JDC) is offering new opportunities to volunteer with our Low-Income Taxpayer Clinic! JDC’s Tax Project has begun offering free CLE trainings for those interested in working with low-income taxpayers. After attending the training, attorneys will be able to start volunteering on simple tax-related matters, even those who don’t have backgrounds in tax law.
Interested volunteers can sign up for the next scheduled training on Thursday, September 20 from 4-5 p.m. at www.sfbar.org/probono-trainings.
The first Tax training on July 26, organized in cooperation with Bay Area Young Tax Lawyers, was a great success. Tax Project Supervising Attorney Amy Spivey led a group of attorneys step-by-step, including those without significant tax experience, through the mechanics of representing low-income taxpayers in controversies before the IRS.
Volunteering with the clinic is a great opportunity to gain more experience with a mentor’s help, become more involved in individual cases, and represent clients. JDC pre-screens all matters and cases, and provides malpractice insurance.
