“My fellowship made me realize that I do want to do something related to the legal field,” said Kitty Zeng, a 2018 Law Academy student.
The Law Academy is one of the Diversity Educational Programs offered by the Bar Association of San Francisco (BASF). The educational programs aim to help students develop their interest in law through mentoring by our volunteer legal professionals.
In celebration of International Mentoring Day on January 17th, we have highlighted some mentoring opportunities provided by our supportive legal community.
- Law Academy, established in 1997 by BASF President Judge Jeffrey Ross, is a six-week summer fellowship that gives high school juniors and seniors direct work experience and school credit interning in law firms and legal departments.
- San Francisco County Mock Trial Program works with local public high school students. Students are coached by volunteer lawyers in the trial of a hypothetical criminal case, to gain persuasive public speaking and evidence advocacy skills.
- Destination Law School partners with Bay Area colleges and law schools to offer undergraduate students personalized law school plans and mentoring.
- 1L Open Doors Job Shadow Program is a three-day program during Spring break. It gives first-year law students an opportunity for experiencing the daily lives of lawyers.
- Every summer, BASF’s annual Summer Diversity Receptions provides minority, LGBTQ law students, and young lawyers an opportunity for networking, meeting mentors, and appreciating the achievements of minority and LGBTQ partners in the Bay Area. Stay tuned for more details!
