The Appellate Section of the Barristers Club is thrilled to announce that its second annual Sandy Svetcov Memorial Lecture will be given on December 9, 2014, by Chief Judge Alex Kozinski of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit.
The Svetcov Memorial Lecture series commemorates the life and work of Sandy Svetcov, one of the leading figures of the California appellate bar until he passed away last year. Sandy’s practice stood for skill and gentility, and each year the Section invites a leading member of the judiciary or bar to come and speak about any feature of modern appellate law, policy, or practice that interests him or her. Last year, for the inaugural lecture in the series, the Section welcomed California Supreme Court Associate Justice Goodwin Liu.
This year’s speaker, Alex Kozinski, is known primarily for being the only sitting federal judge to have won The Dating Game. As a distant second, he’s known as the youngest-appointed federal appellate judge of the modern era, one of the Ninth Circuit’s most outspokenly independent thinkers for the past 30 years (with the last 7 as Chief of the circuit), and one of the finest and funniest legal writers in any jurisdiction.
The program is titled “Chief Judge Alex Kozinski: The Wizard of Koz,” and this December, the yellow brick road leads to San Francisco. Join us as we pull the curtain down and welcome the man behind the myth.
Section chairs: Ben Feuer and Tamara Crepet
