The Justice & Diversity Center (JDC) held its second annual Veterans Legal Services Clinic in November 2015 with Swords to Plowshares, Salesforce.com and Morrison & Foerster.
Together, 14 veterans with 23 legal issues ranging from housing to family law issues, were assisted. In addition to receiving on-site services, veterans were linked to on-going legal representation through JDC’s projects.
Greg, a homeless Vietnam veteran arrived at the Veterans Legal Services Clinic seeking help with housing. August had been a terrible month for Greg. He was diagnosed with liver cancer, his roommate moved out, and Greg quickly fell behind in rent. Four weeks later, Greg was evicted. To make matters worse, he received notice that his subsidized housing voucher had been terminated.
During the clinic interview, volunteers uncovered that Greg was never afforded the informal administrative hearing to which he was entitled before his voucher termination. JDC’s housing team is now representing Greg with the goal of reinstating his voucher, which will be his ticket out of homelessness.
JDC thanks Swords to Plowshares, Salesforce and Morrison & Foerster for joining us to bring vital legal services to veterans.
