The Bar Association of San Francisco is proud to announce the creation of its newest section on Cybersecurity and Privacy Law. The section was created to provide timely information and analysis regarding global developments in cybersecurity, privacy, and data protection law.
The section will focus on a variety of topics including emerging technology, business practices, legislation, regulatory and self-regulatory initiatives and litigation developments. The section will be composed of BASF members with expertise in privacy and data security law as well as government, technical and private sector representatives, and will offer periodic meetings, presentations and publications.
Jeff Rabkin, a partner in Jones Day’s San Francisco office, will serve as the section’s inaugural chairperson. He will be supported by Vice Chairs Sylvia Johnson, senior counsel at Wells Fargo and Daniel Hutchinson, partner at Lieff Cabraser Heimann & Bernstein. Other members of the section’s Executive Committee include Lee Freedman, director of Security and Investigations at Apple, Katherine Tassi, managing counsel (Privacy) at Uber, Jennifer Lynch, senior staff attorney at the Electronic Frontier Foundation and Assistant United States Attorney Matthew Parrella, chief of the Computer Hacking and Theft of Intellectual Property Section of the United States Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of California.
As Rabkin explained, “Given that San Francisco is ground zero for the development of the digital technology that is changing the world — and generating legal issues relating to cyber security and privacy — I am delighted to work side by side with such a diverse and talented group of lawyers to bring this section to life.”
The section is currently working to identify CLE opportunities for BASF members and the general legal community, including CLE presentations regarding:
- Cybersecurity and privacy issues arising from the Internet of Things;
- State and federal regulatory investigations relating to cybersecurity and privacy, including issues regulators commonly investigate, company best practices from a regulatory perspective, and other topics germane to governmental investigations and actions in the privacy field;
- An overview of recent court decisions concerning cybersecurity and privacy law;
- Implementation and incorporation of security measures in tomorrow’s high-tech devices.
