Past President Russ Roeca Appointed to Bench
Russell S. Roeca, who served as BASF President in 2009, was recently appointed by Governor Newsom to the San Francisco County Superior Court bench. Roeca has been a partner at Roeca Haas Montes De Oca since 2000. He was a partner at Hinshaw & Culbertson from 1998 to 2000 and held several positions at Long & Levit from 1985 to 1998, including associate and partner. Roeca fills the vacancy created by the retirement of Judge Carol C. Yaggy.
Board of Supervisors Unanimously Approves Malia Cohen for Police Commission
In August, the Board of Supervisors voted unanimously to approve Malia M. Cohen to serve on the San Francisco Police Commission. In July, Mayor London N. Breed nominated Cohen to serve on the Commission, the seven-member body charged with setting policy for the Police Department and conducting disciplinary hearings when police conduct charges are filed.
Wendy Hernandez Wins Public Law Writing Competition
Wendy Hernandez, recipient of JDC’s 2018 Bay Area Minority Law Student Scholarship, won the California Lawyers Association Public Law Section’s annual Public Law Writing Competition. Her piece on equitable cannabis regulation was published in the Spring 2020 issue of Public Law Journal and earned her a $2,000 prize.

Sean SeLegue Appointed to State Bar Board of Trustees
BASF member Sean SeLegue, Arnold & Porter Kaye Scholer, was recently appointed by the Supreme Court of California to serve as chair of the State Bar of California’s Board of Trustees. Prior to the appointment, SeLegue served as vice-chair. The State Bar’s governing body, the Board of Trustees, develops the guiding policies and principles underpinning its regulatory mission.

BASF Member Recognized on 40 & Under Hot List
BASF member Katy Marie Young, Ad Astra Law Group, was recently recognized by Benchmark Litigation on its 40 & Under Hot List – West.
Young is a founder and managing partner of Ad Astra Law Group. After years of litigation in more traditional industries, she turned her sights on the cannabis industry. She served for three years on the executive committee of BASF’s Litigation Section. She has been named a Super Lawyer Rising Star from 2014 through 2020 and honored as part of Benchmark Litigation’s Top 40 Under 40 Hotlist from 2018 through 2020.
