On October 21, 2018, fifteen members of the San Francisco Superior Court met members of the local community at Corpus Christi Catholic Church in the City’s Excelsior district.
This was the second “Meet the Judges” community outreach event to take place in 2018 and was organized by Presiding Judge Teri Jackson and Judge Daniel Flores. After brief introductions, and discussion of various legal and court programs available to the public, community members had the opportunity to ask questions of the judges. The Meet the Judges events are designed to spark dialogue, reduce uncertainty and break down communication barriers between the bench and the public. “I have already received emails from some of the attendees and they were very positive about our coming to the community neighborhoods to discuss the practical aspects of the judicial and the overall legal systems,” said Presiding Judge Teri Jackson, “I hope that we will be able to continue this collaborative outreach throughout the City and County of San Francisco.”
Among the topics of greatest interest were matters related to housing, crime and sentencing guidelines, probate, jury service, and even questions about how each of the judges stay physically and mentally fit given the rigors of their positions. Following the panel discussion, attendees had the opportunity to talk one-on-one with members of the bench at a reception hosted by Morrison & Foerster.
