Volunteer Legal Service Program (VLSP)

The Volunteer Legal Services Program (VLSP) has been making meaningful change in people’s lives, using our unique blend of legal services and social work, since 1977.

Volunteer attorneys, paralegals, law students and others work alongside our staff to:

  • Ensure the safety and stability of families and children through our Family Law Project

  • Keep individuals, families and children safely housed and
    off the streets
, through our Eviction Prevention ProjectDonate to VLSP

  • Enhance the capacity of nonprofit organizations through our Community Organization Representation Project

  • Prevent debt from pushing people into poverty through our Consumer Debt Defense and Education Clinics

  • Mobilize the resources needed to move people who are homeless into housing, through our Homeless Advocacy Project

Project Homeless Connect

Volunteers who join us find that they:

  • Have an opportunity to give back to the community in a concrete and impactful way

  • Develop critical lawyering skills and gain experience, such as court appearances, case handling, mediations, transactional work, and client interviewing and management

  • Obtain support through our many trainings and resource materials, our expert staff attorneys, and our volunteer expert mentors

  • Work with clients whose cases have been thoroughly screened

  • Gain exposure and develop communication skills in various legal settings

  • Receive recognition for their work through our nominations for pro bono awards

Last year, VLSP staff and over 1,800 VLSP volunteers, assisted nearly 8,000 clients with legal consultation and representation in nearly every area of civil law.
